Appenzell IR introduces plastic collection
Application area with high use of recyclates
Whether for drinking water, heating, heat pumps, cable protection, waste water or gas, plastic pipes are used for a wide variety of purposes and are popular due to their durability, elasticity and high quality. Drinking water pipes installed today have an expected service life of more than 100 years.
90,000 tons
Almost 90,000 tons of plastic pipes are produced and installed in Switzerland every year. Almost 25 percent of this is already made from recycled plastics (cable conduits). Today, these recycled plastics mainly come from recycled packaging.
Recycled plastics
Cuttings from installation and dismantling materials can represent a further source of recycled plastics here, which can close loops within the industry. Due to the long service life of plastic pipes, these quantities are still limited today - however, a solution must already be found today for the increasing return quantities in the future. However, not every type of pipe is suitable for the use of recycled plastics - due to safety and health considerations, recycled plastics are taboo in the gas and drinking water sector.
For a circular economy in the pipe industry
Under the initiative of the Association of Plastic Pipes and Pipe Components and Georg Fischer Piping Systems AG, the VSPR has initiated the "Swiss Plastic Pipe Recycling (SPPR)" project. The project is supported by a large number of members of the pipe value chain, manufacturers, dealers, installers, dismantling companies and plastic recyclers.
The aim of the project is to develop the collection and recycling of plastic pipes in Switzerland.
